How to Keep a New Years Resolution

December 30, 2020

Let’s be real for a sec… you KNOW that about 95% of New Year’s resolutions go out the window by mid-Feb, right? And that’s nobody’s fault – it’s just that old habits are hard to break, and new habits are hard to build… I learned this from my horse training and somatics practice, but it’s SO applicable to every-day life!

So I thought I’d share what I’m doing to keep those promises to mySELF alive and well all the way through 2021. Who knows, if this goes well, I might even add some mid-year goals into the mix to keep leveling-up my game! But if I don’t, I won’t feel guilty at all about pleading #singlemamaoftwintoddlers!!!

Here we go.

8 Action-Steps to WINNING at New Year’s Resolutions

  1. Choose just ONE or TWO and be realistic. Keep it simple, my love!
  2. Write ‘em down on note-cards with a bold marker. Tape one to your bathroom mirror, one to your computer or workspace, and one near the door where you will see it every time you leave the house.
  3. Read your resolutions ALOUD every time you see one of your cards!
  4. Immerse yourself with a podcast on the topic of your resolution, and subscribe or plan to listen to it at least once a week.
  5. Invest some hard-earned $$$ toward your goal. Buy something (like a new nutritional supplement or piece of equipement) or enroll in a course or program with weekly classes or sessions to keep you on track. For example, if your resolution is to improve your body-awareness, communication skills and relationship with your horse, you could enroll in my Dancing with Horses 30-day Challenge, which goes live Jan 1st. Click here if you want to learn more about it.
  6. Create some accountability. Join a group of like-minded folks (facebook probably has one) and be active in it. Make an agreement with a gal-pal to commit to your one resolution together.
  7. Schedule it. Write your goals down in your planner or journal, and put them on your calendar. Choose a dedicated
time-slot to focus on your action-steps toward your goal, and literally block it out on your schedule.
  8. When (not if) it gets hard, DON’T GIVE UP! Change takes time to happen, and you have to DO the WORK to get the RESULTS.

I want to be the best mom I can for my kids. I want to be strong. I want to have time and energy to go to the barn and horse around… so here’s my action plan:

Here are my two simple self-care New Years Resolutions

New Years Resolutions of yoga and vitamins

#1 – Create a home-practice of yoga in my daily life again – for both fitness and ‘me time.’

#2 – Commit to taking my vitamins and supplements (I usually forget…) especially the new ones I’m excited to be adding to support my body and mind!

Here’s my 8-Step Action Plan:

  1. I kept it simple by choosing two small and totally do-able goals (see above).

2&3. Writing them down now, (I’ll put a photo of my note-cards in this post) and already reading aloud…

  1. Podcast: The Gabby Reece Show. Why? When I lived on Kaua’i, I was lucky to be part of Gabby’s community workout group, and it was the most fun and inspiring a$$-kicking exercise program I’ve ever experienced. I picked this one as a reminder of how bad-ass I can be, and WILL be again!
  2. I’ve invested in a new host of vitamins and nutritional/fitness supplements (details below) and enrolled in a weekly online Somatic Yoga class.
  3. Accountability – my Mom. 😉 and YOU, with this public blog post. Do I get Bonus Points?
  4. Mom and I have a weekly schedule together, and I’m not letting my mama down! Plus, my yoga class on Fridays.
  5. Doing the work, daily. The kids remind me to take my supplements because they love their gummy vitamins and ask for them every morning. I moved some furniture so I have room to do my Sun Salutations while the kids play in the living room. I almost forgot what sore muscles felt like…So far, so good!

I hope this post inspires you and finds you well. Drop a comment below and let me know what your simple and doable goals/resolutions are for the beginning of 2021?

Much love,
Alissa

PS – if your Resolutions include improving your body-awareness, communication skills and relationship with your horse, one of your action-steps could be to enroll in my Dancing with Horses 30-day Challenge, which goes live Jan 1st. CLICK HERE if you want to learn more about it!
