Let’s be real for a sec… you KNOW that about 95% of New Year’s resolutions go out the window by mid-Feb, right? And that’s nobody’s fault – it’s just that old habits are hard to break, and new habits are hard to build… I learned this from my horse training and somatics practice, but it’s SO applicable to every-day life!
So I thought I’d share what I’m doing to keep those promises to mySELF alive and well all the way through 2021. Who knows, if this goes well, I might even add some mid-year goals into the mix to keep leveling-up my game! But if I don’t, I won’t feel guilty at all about pleading #singlemamaoftwintoddlers!!!
Here we go.
8 Action-Steps to WINNING at New Year’s Resolutions
- Choose just ONE or TWO and be realistic. Keep it simple, my love!
- Write ‘em down on note-cards with a bold marker. Tape one to your bathroom mirror, one to your computer or workspace, and one near the door where you will see it every time you leave the house.
- Read your resolutions ALOUD every time you see one of your cards!
- Immerse yourself with a podcast on the topic of your resolution, and subscribe or plan to listen to it at least once a week.
- Invest some hard-earned $$$ toward your goal. Buy something (like a new nutritional supplement or piece of equipement) or enroll in a course or program with weekly classes or sessions to keep you on track. For example, if your resolution is to improve your body-awareness, communication skills and relationship with your horse, you could enroll in my Dancing with Horses 30-day Challenge, which goes live Jan 1st. - Create some accountability. Join a group of like-minded folks (facebook probably has one) and be active in it. Make an agreement with a gal-pal to commit to your one resolution together.
- Schedule it. Write your goals down in your planner or journal, and put them on your calendar. Choose a dedicated
time-slot to focus on your action-steps toward your goal, and literally block it out on your schedule. - When (not if) it gets hard, DON’T GIVE UP! Change takes time to happen, and you have to DO the WORK to get the RESULTS.
I want to be the best mom I can for my kids. I want to be strong. I want to have time and energy to go to the barn and horse around… so here’s my action plan:
Here are my two simple self-care New Years Resolutions

#1 – Create a home-practice of yoga in my daily life again – for both fitness and ‘me time.’
#2 – Commit to taking my vitamins and supplements (I usually forget…) especially the new ones I’m excited to be adding to support my body and mind!
Here’s my 8-Step Action Plan:
- I kept it simple by choosing two small and totally do-able goals (see above).
2&3. Writing them down now, (I’ll put a photo of my note-cards in this post) and already reading aloud…
- Podcast: The Gabby Reece Show. Why? When I lived on Kaua’i, I was lucky to be part of Gabby’s community workout group, and it was the most fun and inspiring a$$-kicking exercise program I’ve ever experienced. I picked this one as a reminder of how bad-ass I can be, and WILL be again!
- I’ve invested in a new host of vitamins and nutritional/fitness supplements (details below) and enrolled in a weekly online Somatic Yoga class.
- Accountability – my Mom. 😉 and YOU, with this public blog post. Do I get Bonus Points?
- Mom and I have a weekly schedule together, and I’m not letting my mama down! Plus, my yoga class on Fridays.
- Doing the work, daily. The kids remind me to take my supplements because they love their gummy vitamins and ask for them every morning. I moved some furniture so I have room to do my Sun Salutations while the kids play in the living room. I almost forgot what sore muscles felt like…So far, so good!
I hope this post inspires you and finds you well. Drop a comment below and let me know what your simple and doable goals/resolutions are for the beginning of 2021?
Much love,
Alissa
PS – if your Resolutions include improving your body-awareness, communication skills and relationship with your horse, one of your action-steps could be to enroll in my Dancing with Horses 30-day Challenge, which goes live Jan 1st. CLICK HERE if you want to learn more about it!
